Senior Chief Petty Officer
U.S. Navy SEAL Retired
Ty Smith is a combat decorated military Senior Enlisted Leader and an accomplished technology entrepreneur. Ty has often been told that there are very few people that are as agile, focused, versatile, and cultured as he. As a retired Navy SEAL and nearly fluent in Italian, Ty's service to the United States of America spanned 20 years of honorable service to include six combat tours to Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Afghanistan.
Throughout his military career, Ty served in various leadership roles. Prior to the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, Ty had only been in the Navy for less than three years when he was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as an Italian translator for a Naval Support Activity in Sardinia, Italy; working directly with the Italian Carabinieri as the U.S. Navy Military Police Liaison.
Following the terror attacks of 9/11, Ty was selected for Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/s) school in Coronado, CA. After the completion of BUD/s and SEAL Qualification Training, Ty was assigned to SEAL Team Eight as a SEAL Operator. Following a successful tour of duty at SEAL Team Eight, Ty was assigned to instructor duty at BUD/s and served as an instructor for three years prior to being assigned to SEAL Team One.
During Ty's time at SEAL Team One, he served in various leadership roles to include a tour of duty overseas as an Assaulter and Partner Force Team Leader for a National Mission Unit. Ty ended his operational career by leading SEAL Team One, Echo Platoon through the pacification of more than 700 enemy combatants in the Tangi Valley of Afghanistan. This resulted in the issuance of more than 20 Valor awards to the men following his leadership, and a Navy Unit Commendation award for SEAL Team One within four months.
Following a spectacular career in Naval Special Warfare, Ty completed his Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management from Ashford University where he currently serves as a member of the University's Board of Trustees. Furthermore, Ty earned a Master of Business for Veterans from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business, where he currently serves as a member of the Marshall Business School Board of Counselors.
After retiring from the United States Navy, Ty founded Vigilance Risk Solutions (VRS), a technology company that specializes in conflict and violence prevention. In less than five years, VRS achieved economic milestones by increasing revenue by more than 300%. Also, VRS has raised over $1M in investor funding; earned marquee clientele like Disney, Westfield, Clorox, and many others. VRS is currently incubating at EvoNexus in La Jolla, CA, which is of the leading technology company incubators in the country.
